About the museum
Construction of the castle in Janowiec began in the early 16th century under Mikołaj Firlej; his son Piotr converted it into a residence in 1526. In 1577–1587 Andrzej Firlej commissioned the Italian architect Santi Gucci (Fiorentino) to design a new palace wing. In the first half of the 17th century the Tarło family gave the building early Baroque features. In 1654 the castle passed to the Lubomirski family, and in 1656 the Swedes seized it and partly burned it. Its best period came under Antoni Benedykt Lubomirski, who added Rococo decoration.
In 1778 the castle was sold to Mikołaj Piaskowski, and in the 19th and early 20th centuries it fell into ruin. In 1931 Leon Kozłowski bought it, and in 1975 it passed to the State Treasury and was handed over to the museum from Kazimierz Dolny. The site was secured as a permanent ruin and partly rebuilt for exhibition purposes. Since 2025 it has operated as the independent Muzeum Zamek w Janowcu.
Visitors can enter the courtyard, the arcades and the Galeria w Bramie (Gate Gallery), and see in the open-air museum the granary from Podlodów with the exhibition “Życie między dwoma brzegami” (Life Between Two Banks), about the boats used for transport and fishing on the Vistula. The Dom Północny (Northern House) and the Dwór z Moniak (manor house from Moniaki) are temporarily closed, as permanent exhibitions are being prepared there. Revitalisation of the courtyard is also under way.
