About the museum
The Muzeum Narciarstwa w Cieklinie (Museum of Skiing in Cieklin) was established in 2008 thanks to the efforts of the local government of the Dębowiec commune, collectors and village residents. Those who had a decisive influence on its creation included Barbara Prinke-Kusiba, co-owner of the collection of Józef Kusiba, Zbigniew Staniszewski, the wójt (head) of the Dębowiec commune, and Dr Leon Rak. The institution was set up with support from the European Regional Development Fund and is housed in the rural community centre (wiejski dom kultury) in Cieklin. The patron of the museum is Stanisław Barabasz, a pioneer of Polish skiing in the 19th century, and the village is regarded as the cradle of Polish skiing.
The museum has one of the largest ski equipment collections in the country. The collections include skis, poles, boots, bindings, medals, badges, books and other materials related to skiing. The exhibits are arranged chronologically, so as to show how skiing in Poland changed over 120 years. The oldest surviving skis date from 1917. The institution also holds the archive of Tadeusz Wowkonowicz, a skier and sports activist.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum organises temporary exhibitions and vernissages, for example of paintings. Virtual exhibitions and academic materials are available on its website.
