About the museum

The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian stands on a hill in the Lemko village of Bartne and is the third church built on this site since the village was founded. The first church probably burned down, but some of its icons have survived and are now part of the iconostasis. The second was built in 1758, and a later major renovation, dated by an inscription on the lintel of the western portal, took place in 1842.

The building has a log construction, mainly with fish-tail (rybi ogon) corner joints, and is not oriented, as the presbytery faces north. The last thorough renovation was carried out in 1968–1970; the exterior colouring was unusual even against the background of Lemko culture. Inside, an original 19th-century iconostasis with Carpathian icons has survived, along with an arched altar and an unusual side altar.

The church is now a branch of the Muzeum Dwory Karwacjanów i Gładyszów w Gorlicach (Museum of the Karwacjan and Gładysz Manors in Gorlice). In the vestibule an exhibition on the colours of Lemko churches is shown, in the nave one on icon theology, and in the presbytery one on the history of the Greek Catholic parish in Bartne.
