About the museum
The Skansen Archeologiczny “Karpacka Troja” (Carpathian Troy Archaeological Open-Air Museum) was created in Trzcinica near Jasło, at the Wały Królewskie stronghold, which occupies a hill above the Ropa valley. Archaeologists discovered traces of settlement from the turn of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and later from the time of the Otomani-Füzesabony culture, when the settlement was surrounded by defensive ramparts. These are considered the oldest known fortified settlements in Poland, and evidence of the influence of the Anatolian-Balkan civilisation on Polish lands.
On the same hill, in the early medieval period, from about the end of the 8th century to 1031, there was a Slavic stronghold of more than 3 hectares, surrounded by ramparts about 1,250 metres long. Excavations were carried out here in 1991–1997 and 2005–2009.
The open-air museum was built in 2007–2009, mainly with funds from the Mechanizm Finansowy Europejskiego Obszaru Gospodarczego (EEA Financial Mechanism). The planned opening in 2010 was postponed by the June flood, and the facility was opened to visitors in June 2011. On the stronghold more than 150 metres of ramparts, two gates and several huts have been reconstructed from the Bronze Age and early medieval periods. In the archaeological park at the foot of the hill stand reconstructions of an Otomani village and a Slavic village. The open-air museum is a branch of the Muzeum Podkarpackie w Krośnie (Podkarpacie Museum in Krosno), runs museum lessons and workshops, and in August organises an archaeological festival.
