About the museum
The Muzeum Nożyczek in Tarnogród was founded in 2012 at the Miejska Biblioteka Publiczna (Municipal Public Library). The idea arose when the library manager Joanna Puchacz was looking for information on the town's coat of arms, on which a griffin holds shears. The first exhibits were donated by Witold Tchórzewski, director of the European Centre of Fairy Tales in Pacanów, and later the collection grew through donations from private individuals.
The collection contains more than 150 items: tailors', technical, surgical, hairdressing and cosmetic scissors, as well as scissors for bonsai, sheep shearing, eggs, cigars and metal, cable-cutters, buttonhole scissors and scissors for trimming cats' claws. Among them is, for example, a gilded pair of scissors for crabs and lobsters, decorated with mother-of-pearl, donated in 2015.
The museum is in the library building at ul. Kościuszki 3, to which the library moved from a former 17th-century synagogue. In the same building is the Regionalna Izba Pamięci (Regional Memorial Room), opened in 2005, with more than three hundred exhibits. The museum's website also offers a virtual tour.
