About the museum
The Museum of the Bernardine Province in Leżajsk was founded in 1971 on the initiative of Fr Kajetan Grudziński OFM. The idea of establishing it first emerged in the 1960s, when after the Second World War it became necessary to secure monuments from monasteries that remained outside Poland’s borders. The project was approved in 1960, and three years later it was decided that the seat would be the monastery in Leżajsk. The first director was Fr Kajetan Grudziński.
Monuments from former Bernardine monasteries reached Leżajsk, among them from Lwów, Sokal, Zbaraż, Gwoźdźca, Husiatyn, Krystynopol, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Kraków, Tarnów, Opatów, Łęczyca, Skępe and Radecznica. The seat is in the monastery complex built in 1618–1628, in the south-western wing of the monastery and its undercroft. The exhibition rooms are on two floors above the sacristy of the basilica and are linked by a staircase in the former clock tower.
The collections include paintings, sculptures, elements of church furnishings, vestments and liturgical vessels, Sarmatian portraits, funerary art and everyday objects of the friars. One of the greatest attractions is the historic vaulted undercroft, with exposed fragments of 17th-century fortifications. The museum is part of the sanctuary, organises temporary exhibitions and carries out documentation and conservation work.
