About the museum
The museum was established in 1966 by resolution of the District People’s Council. A year later it began operating as the Regional Museum in Biłgoraj, initially as a branch of the museum in Lublin and later of the one in Zamość. The core of the collections came from the collection of regionalist Michał Pękalski. In 1973, when the old sieve-makers’ houses were being demolished, one farmstead was preserved and set up as a branch, an open-air museum called the Sitarska Farmstead (Zagroda Sitarska), which opened in 1976.
In 1999 the museum was taken over by Biłgoraj County as the Museum of the Biłgoraj Land (Muzeum Ziemi Biłgorajskiej). In March 2014 the collections were moved to a new seat at ul. Kościuszki 87, in the building of the former County Office (Starostwo Powiatowe).
The museum currently presents the permanent exhibition “Nad Tanwią i Ładą – dzieje Biłgoraja i okolic” (On the Tanew and the Łada – History of Biłgoraj and Its Surroundings), which tells the history of the region from prehistory to the present day. Its branches include the Sitarska Farmstead with 19th-century wooden buildings, the Mill Complex on the White Łada, and the Museum of Polish Partisans “Osuchy ’44”.
