About the museum
The Museum of the Leżajsk Land operates in the complex of the Starost’s Manor (Dwór Starościński), also called the castle, whose origins go back to the first half of the 16th century. After the Tatar raid of 1524, King Sigismund I the Old moved the town to a more defensible site on a hill, and the Leżajsk starost Krzysztof Szydłowiecki built there, in 1524–1532, a residential and defensive complex with a wooden manor house, a tower and farm buildings. The manor was destroyed during raids, among others in 1609 and during the Swedish Deluge.
The present brick manor house with four side wings was built in 1760–1770 for the last starost of Leżajsk, Józef Potocki. The main building is single-storey, on an elongated rectangular plan, with two-storey dormers over the central section; beneath it are two-storey cellars with barrel vaults.
In the historic complex the permanent exhibitions are: archaeology and Old Polish history in the cellars of the wing; the history of the town and region in the attic of the manor; an ethnographic and toy exhibition; and an exhibition on brewing in one of the wings, showing the history of brewing, beer production and the awards won by the Leżajsk brewery. The museum also organises museum lessons, temporary exhibitions and competitions.
