About the museum
The Botanic Garden Museum is linked to the scientific and teaching work of the oldest botanic garden in Poland, founded in 1783. Collections began to be assembled at the end of the 18th century. The permanent exhibition was opened to the public in 1983, during the garden’s 200th anniversary celebrations, on the ground floor of the former Astronomical Observatory, which was renamed the Śniadecki Collegium in 1963.
The museum occupies seven rooms with a total area of 172 m², including four exhibition halls (110 m²). The botanical collections comprise about 5,400 specimens: fruits, seeds, dendrological specimens – that is, cross-sections and trunks of trees – and whole plants preserved in liquid. They were gathered in the garden and during botanists’ expeditions to Europe, Africa, America and Asia in the 19th and 20th centuries, including by Jan Kornaś, Maria Olech, Marian Raciborski and Władysław Szafer.
A separate group consists of historical-botanical collections: archival materials, old teaching aids such as plant models, charts and microscope slides, and iconographic materials – photographs, drawings, paintings and watercolours. Temporary exhibitions on nature and botany are held in the museum every year.
