About the museum

The Salonik Historii Pielęgniarstwa (Salon of the History of Nursing) is located in the building at ul. Kopernika 25, where the Uniwersytecka Szkoła Pielęgniarek i Opiekunek Zdrowia (University School of Nurses and Health Care Assistants, Higienistek) operated from 1925 to 1950. Today the building houses the seat of the Instytut Pielęgniarstwa i Położnictwa (Institute of Nursing and Midwifery) of the Wydział Nauk o Zdrowiu (Faculty of Health Sciences) of the Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum. The collections are housed in a former room with a fireplace, called the “salonik”, which was restored thanks to the efforts of the institute’s staff.

The official opening took place during an international conference marking 100 years of nursing in Poland, held on 2–3 June 2011. The aim of the Salonik is to save from oblivion the achievements of the pioneers of the profession, to build the professional identity of nursing students and to show the origins and development of the profession.

The exhibition includes original documents, chronicles, minutes, photographs, portraits and letters, a library with old textbooks and journals for nurses, uniforms of pupils, national and international decorations, and furniture from the 1930s. A separate place is devoted to the most distinguished nurses, including Maria Epstein, Anna Rydlówna, Teresa Kulczyńska and Hanna Chrzanowska. Personal memorabilia survive from them, such as a piano, gramophone records, a typewriter and a work table. The exhibition shows the successive stages of the activity of the Kraków nursing school and the development of higher-level training.
