About the museum
The Museum of the Faculty of Medicine of the Jagiellonian University was founded on the initiative of Prof. Walery Jaworski, and on 27 April 1900 the Faculty adopted a resolution to establish a historical museum. The collections came mainly from doctors and professors associated with the university and from their families. For many years they had no permanent exhibition, as there was no space, but the museum survived the occupation intact.
In 1990 the museum received rooms on the ground floor of the House of the Kraków Medical Society (Dom Towarzystwa Lekarskiego Krakowskiego) at ul. Radziwiłłowska 4, and on 16 June 1992 the rector of the Medical Academy, Prof. Andrzej Szczeklik, solemnly opened it to visitors. The institution is regarded as one of the oldest medical museums in Europe.
The collections include early prints, manuscripts, documents, medals, medical instruments and portraits, a large set of surgical instruments, plaster casts from the study of Prof. Ludwik Bierkowski, and a collection of case histories from the clinic of Prof. Maciej Józef Brodowicz. The museum has three exhibition halls and a room for educational activities; the exhibition is currently being reorganised following the acquisition of new memorabilia from the University Hospital.
