About the museum
For almost twenty years after the war, Kołobrzeg waited for its own museum. The order establishing a regional museum was issued on 9 May 1963, and the collections were based on archaeological finds from the excavations of early medieval Kołobrzeg led by Prof. Lech Leciejewicz.
In 1966 the institution began to be transformed into a historical-military museum and adopted the name Muzeum Oręża Polskiego (Museum of Polish Arms). The first permanent exhibition, “The History of Polish Arms in Western Pomerania”, opened on 8 May 1966 in the tower of the collegiate church. The current exhibition building at ul. Emilii Gierczak, designed by Andrzej Lepczyński, was erected for the 35th anniversary of the battles for the town; the exhibition opened on 17 March 1980.
Since 1999 the museum has been a local government cultural institution run by Kołobrzeg County. Alongside the main branch, “The History of Polish Arms”, with its open-air display and the 15th-century Merchant’s Tenement House, the complex includes the Kołobrzeg City Museum in the Braunschweig Palace, the Kołobrzeg Maritime Skansen, the Cold War Museum in Podborsko and the Museum of Aviation and Military Technology in Rogowo.
The collections include edged and firearms, protective equipment, uniforms, decorations and technical objects, among them the Enigma cipher machine and the Sokół 600 motorcycle. The museum also has the richest collection in Poland of uniforms worn by Polish soldiers during both world wars.
