About the museum
The Museum of Sea Fishing in Niechorze was founded on the initiative of residents gathered around former fisherman Henryk Gmyrek. In November 1992 a Social Committee for the Organisation of a Fishing Museum was set up. Thanks to cooperation with the Workers' Holiday Fund (Fundusz Wczasów Pracowniczych), a small pre-war building on today's Aleja Bursztynowa was obtained. The museum opened to visitors on 11 June 1994.
The first exhibitions consisted of maritime collections from the local primary school, deposits and donations: fishing gear, boats, fish specimens, documents and photographs related to sea and lake fishing. In 2003 the institution moved to a pre-war villa at Aleja Bursztynowa 28, where it remains today. Over time the number of exhibits grew, educational activity developed, and cooperation with other museums, including the National Museum in Szczecin, expanded.
Since 2009 the museum was part of the Municipal Cultural Centre (GOK) in Rewal, and since 2017 it has been an independent municipal cultural institution. It consists of two units: the museum in Niechorze and the Exhibition Hall in Rewal. The institution's main aim is to spread knowledge of the traditions and history of the Rewal Coast and to protect its collections, especially the culture of fishing, which local residents and tourists visiting the Rewal municipality get to know.
