About the museum
The museum in Gozdowice was founded in 1965 on the initiative of sappers from the Wyższa Szkoła Oficerska Wojsk Inżynieryjnych (Higher Officers’ School of Engineer Troops) in Wrocław, under Major Konstanty Machajski. The first custodian of the collection was Senior Private Andrzej Kraska. Today it is a branch of the Muzeum Pamiątek 1. Armii Wojska Polskiego oraz Dziejów Ziemi Mieszkowickiej (Museum of Memorabilia of the 1st Polish Army and History of the Mieszkowice Land), an organisational unit of the Mieszkowice commune, and it belongs to the Rejon Pamięci Narodowej nad Odrą (National Memory Area on the Oder).
The building is connected with the events of spring 1945: in April, during the crossing of the Oder, it housed the headquarters of General Jerzy Bordziłowski, chief of the engineer troops of the 1st Polish Army, and of Major Aleksander Kofanow, commander of the 6th Pontoon-Bridge Battalion.
The collection includes documents, maps, photographs, uniforms and models of equipment, among them pontoon bridges and a kafar (pile driver). The exhibition is complemented by a reconstructed combat bunker of the engineer troops’ commander. Outside, open-air exhibits are on display, such as amphibious vehicles, boats and landing barges. The museum runs museum lessons, and a guide takes visitors around the whole Rejon Pamięci Narodowej.
