About the museum
The Muzeum Parafialne w Grybowie (Grybów Parish Museum) is housed in the so-called Old Parish House (Stara Plebania), a wooden building from 1699 that was entered in the register of monuments in the 1970s. For years the house served as a parish house, then was partly a parish house and partly a museum, until it became a cultural facility with a museum and a parish library of more than five thousand volumes. The building underwent a general renovation in 2011.
The collections were assembled by Fr Jan Solak, who saved relics of Grybów’s former sacred buildings, among them the Kazimierzowski church from 1340 and the small church of St Bernardine from 1455. The museum is a branch of the Diocesan Museum in Tarnów.
The permanent exhibition is divided into two parts: the first presents the achievements of Western Christian civilisation, the second Eastern, and a small corner devoted to Jewish tradition complements them. The most valuable object in the Western part is the painting of the Nowy Sącz–Kraków school “St Sophia with Her Daughters” from 1440, and the Eastern part shows icons, including ones from the 17th century. The collections also include folk art, sculptures, liturgical vessels, documents, textiles and furniture.
