About the museum

The Muzeum Sztuki Ludowej im. ks. Edwarda Nitki (Fr Edward Nitka Museum of Folk Art) is located on the parish grounds in Paszyn, in the rooms of the old parish house. It has been officially operating since 1994, although the collections began to be formed much earlier and are constantly growing. It is a branch of the Diocesan Museum in Tarnów.

The beginnings of the collection go back to the 1960s. Fr Edward Nitka, parish priest in Paszyn from 1957, encouraged parishioners to create art, and the first artist was the deaf and mute brother of the sexton, Wojciech Oleksy, who gave his sculptures to the parish priest. Other village residents followed him, and in the 1970s and 1980s several dozen creators of wood sculptures and paintings on glass emerged in Paszyn. This phenomenon is known as the “Paszyn phenomenon” (fenomen paszyński).

Today the collections contain more than three thousand exhibits, mainly sculptures and paintings on glass, some of which also serve as church decorations. The museum has been modernised, and some of the sculptures are shown in new display cases. Artists from Paszyn continue to add to the collections and take part in folk art competitions.
