About the museum

The Miasteczko Galicyjskie (Galician Town) is a branch of the Muzeum Ziemi Sądeckiej, established next to the Sądecki Park Etnograficzny (Sącz Ethnographic Park) in Nowy Sącz. It recreates the market square of a typical small town of old Galicia, with several dozen houses kept in the atmosphere of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The western side of the square is closed by a town hall with a slender tower and arcades, a replica of a never-realised design for the seat of the authorities of Stary Sącz. Inside are a ticket office, a café, an exhibition hall, a reading room and guest rooms. Two burgher townhouses from Stary Sącz also stand on the square, housing a photographic studio, a watchmaker’s workshop and a pottery workshop. At the western end of the square a gentry manor house from Łososina Górna, destroyed in the 1970s, has been reconstructed, and it houses a specialist library.

The town has workshops and shops, including ones selling toys and wooden decorations, an antiquarian bookshop, a dental surgery, a retro-style pharmacy, a Jewish tailor, a confectioner’s, a post office, a colonial goods shop and a barber’s. A separate exhibition presents the works of self-taught artists, sculptors and painters from Paszyn, while regional dishes are served in the inn from Orawka. Concerts, festivals and fairs are held on the site.
