About the museum
The Muzeum Pszczelarstwa (Beekeeping Museum) operates on the grounds of the Barć apiary in Kamianna in the Low Beskids, run by the Nowak family. The apiary lies at an altitude of about 650 m above sea level among coniferous forests. It breeds queen bees, produces bee products and trains beekeepers. Alongside the beekeeping pavilion there is a shop and a café.
The museum’s collections consist of two exhibitions: a biographical one devoted to Father Dr Henryk Ostach, a priest and beekeeper and long-serving president of the Polski Związek Pszczelarski (Polish Beekeepers’ Association), and a beekeeping exhibition with equipment and tools from the last two hundred years. Next to it is an open-air display of hives, showing both the oldest hives made from tree trunks and figural hives, as well as a gallery of depictions of St Ambrose, the patron saint of beekeepers.
A guided tour begins at the little church (cerkiewka) in Kamianna and covers the open-air display of hives, the apiary with an explanation of the biology of the bee family, the workshops in the pavilion, the St Ambrose gallery, the apiary shop with a talk about bee products, a gallery of headwear to try on, and the café with a honey tasting.
