About the museum
Museum traditions in Myślibórz go back to 1928, when exhibitions on prehistory, the Middle Ages, sacred monuments, ethnography and regional history were opened in the rebuilt monastery wing. The post-war institution was established on 1 January 1967; at first it used rooms in the house of culture and the Brama Pyrzycka (Pyrzyce Gate), and from 1969 the Chapel of St. Gertrude, intended for temporary exhibitions.
After years of efforts the museum moved to the Chapel of the Holy Spirit (kaplica św. Ducha), built of stone and brick probably in the first half of the 15th century. The building served sacred functions until the Reformation and was later used, among other things, as a sheepfold, a brewery, a salt store, a fire station and a dwelling. The renovation lasted almost two years, and the solemn opening of the museum in the restored chapel took place on 20 September 1979, with a permanent exhibition on early medieval settlement in the Myślibórz Lake District (Pojezierze Myśliborskie).
Today the chapel is the museum’s main seat. In three rooms on two floors, the archaeological collections are shown, including a reconstructed pit dwelling (ziemianka), Lusatian culture cinerary urns and an early medieval pisanka-grzechotka (rattle egg); an ethnographic collection with pipes, dowry chests and a weaving workshop; and art: pewter vessels, crucifixes, Renaissance tiles and porcelain. The museum also has the Galeria “M” with temporary exhibitions, the Ośrodek Edukacji Plastycznej (Art Education Centre) in the Chapel of St. Gertrude, a ceramics studio and a rich programme of museum lessons.
