About the museum
The Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna (Underground Tourist Route) in Sandomierz was created from former medieval cellars and merchants’ warehouses, which for centuries served Sandomierz traders. The cellars were secured and joined into a single route, which was opened to visitors in the 1970s; from 1976 it was leased by the Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze (PTTK).
After the lease expired at the end of 2012, the town regained the site, and since 2017 the administrator has been the gmina of Sandomierz; the route is run on its behalf by the Sandomierskie Centrum Kultury (Sandomierz Cultural Centre). The route is just under half a kilometre long and consists of 34 chambers, some of which reach more than a dozen metres into the ground.
The underground is one of the greatest attractions of Sandomierz and, according to press reports, is visited by between one hundred and two hundred thousand people a year. Visitors learn there about the history of the town and the legends associated with the dungeons, including the story of Halina Krępianka. The entrance is at ul. Oleśnickich, a side street leading off the corner of the Rynek.
