About the museum
The Muzeum Powstania Chochołowskiego (Chochołów Uprising Museum) opened in 1978 in the historic cottage of the wealthy farmer Jan Bafia. The house is a typical example of Podhale log construction (budownictwo zrębowe) and consists of a hall (sień), the “black” room (izba czarna), the “white” room (izba biała), a storeroom (komora) and a loft (wyżka) above the storeroom. The institution is a branch of the Tatra Museum in Zakopane and now operates under the name Zagroda Bafiów w Chochołowie (Bafia Homestead in Chochołów).
The exhibition recalls the Chochołów Uprising of 1846, known as the “poruseństwo” – a short-lived armed revolt against Austria, which broke out in Chochołów on 21 February 1846 under the leadership of Jan Kanty Andrusikiewicz and Fr Leopold Kmietowicz. It shows the course of the Kraków Revolution, the preparations for the uprising, the profiles of the leaders, documents, a list of participants and the repressions by the partitioning power, as well as the earlier history of the royal village of Chochołów.
The interiors were arranged so that the history of the uprising is combined with the ethnographic exhibition: the “black” room contains objects of everyday life of a highland family, and the formal “white” parlour has decorated furniture, paintings on glass and ceramics. The exhibition closes with literature on the uprising and with contemporary folk sculpture and paintings on glass on insurgent themes.
