About the museum
The Silesian Press Museum was established in 1985 on the initiative of the Society of Friends of the Pszczyna Region (Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Pszczyńskiej). Its seat is a burgher townhouse from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries on ul. Piastowska, which was rescued from demolition. Its founders and creators were Aleksander Spyra, long-serving curator, and his wife Krystyna. The museum is named after Wojciech Korfanty, leader of the Silesians and founder of popular Polish newspapers in Silesia.
The exhibition consists of newspapers and magazines with patriotic content, documenting the shaping of the Polish national consciousness of the Silesians, the three Silesian Uprisings and the plebiscite. Machines and equipment related to the former printing trade, bookbinding and the Silesian press are also shown, as well as a reconstructed study of Wojciech Korfanty with original furnishings, photographs and copies of newspapers. Visitors can print a souvenir sheet themselves on a historic Boston-type press from 1850.
On the upper floor of the townhouse is the Izba u Telemanna, a chamber music hall presenting old instruments from Silesia and used for concerts. In recent years the interiors of the ground and upper floors have been renovated, multimedia, an interactive map of the old printing houses of Silesia and new display cases have been added. The museum lies on the Route of Technical Monuments of the Silesian Voivodeship (Szlak Zabytków Techniki).
