About the museum

The Muzeum Przyrodnicze im. Krystyny i Włodzimierza Tomków was established in 1989, when the collections were made available in a building belonging to the municipality of Ciężkowice. The collection was assembled over more than 50 years by Dr Włodzimierz Tomek and his wife Krystyna, who also promoted nature conservation; from the 1980s the collections could be seen in their family home at ul. św. Andrzeja. After Dr Tomek's death in 1995 the municipality bought the collection from the family with funds from the Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection in Tarnów (Wojewódzki Fundusz Ochrony Środowiska w Tarnowie).

In 2009 the museum moved temporarily to the former “Sokół” building at ul. 3 Maja during renovation work, and in its present seat it has operated since December 2011. It is run by the Centre of Culture and Promotion of the Ciężkowice Municipality.

The collection includes about 200 bird species, among them more than 20 species from the Polish Red Data Book, about 500 insects (including about 300 butterflies), hunting trophies, mounted mammals, more than 100 models of vascular plants, fossils and a diorama of birds of prey. The exhibition also has a glass floor above reconstructed habitats, stations with bird calls, a photo gallery with a touch screen and a projection of a river with the local fish fauna. Next to the museum operates the Małopolska Centre of Ecological Education, with an interactive exhibition on the nature of the Pogórze region.
