About the museum

The Muzeum Historii Ziemi Kamieńskiej was founded in 2006 on the initiative of local activists and the Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Kamieńskiej, first as an exhibition in the cathedral chapter house. It was formally established by the town council in 2009. Since 2015 the main seat has been a new building on the Kwartał Dominikański, next to the Osiedle Katedralne. The institution also runs the Dwór Kleista, a historic manor house of a dean from the second half of the 17th century, located in the Osiedle Katedralne.

The collection contains objects connected with the history of the region. A large part consists of finds from archaeological excavations: Bronze Age hoards, the hilt of a Viking knife from the 10th century, medieval cooking pots (grapens), tools and vessels from the Stone Age, and Renaissance tiles. The exhibition is complemented by sacred art from the cathedral treasury, donations from residents and artists, glass negatives by Adolf Bartelt, and the gold signet ring of Bishop Mikołaj Bock.

Since 2021 the museum has presented the multimedia exhibition “Kamieński kondensator. Dziedzictwo światowego odkrycia Ewalda von Kleista” (The Kamień Capacitor: Heritage of a Worldwide Discovery by Ewald von Kleist), devoted to the invention from Kamień Pomorski that became the basis of the electrical capacitor. The exhibition is housed in the Dwór Kleista and on the ground floor of the main building. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, events and guided tours of the cathedral and the town.
