About the museum
The idea of a district museum was first put forward in 1931 by Stanisław Czernik, director of the municipal grammar school. It was taken up by Władysław Golus, an official of the town office, who from 1958 kept souvenirs of the Ostrzeszów Land in his own flat and organised exhibitions. In 1965 he handed the collection over to the town, and the Izba Pamiątek Historycznych (Room of Historical Souvenirs) opened; in 1968 the collection was moved to rooms in the town hall. The Muzeum Regionalne began its activity on 28 June 1969; in 2002 it was given the name of its founder, and since 1992 it has been a department of the Ostrzeszowskie Centrum Kultury (Ostrzeszów Cultural Centre).
The museum is housed in the town hall on the Rynek, where the permanent exhibitions are on the second floor. The collections number more than 9,600 exhibits in the fields of history, archaeology, ethnography, art and numismatics. The most important collections are the works of the painter Antoni Serbeński, souvenirs of the Powstanie Wielkopolskie (Greater Poland Uprising), and documents, photographs and uniforms connected with the Norwegian officers imprisoned from August 1943 to January 1945 in the German prisoner-of-war camp Oflag XXI C in Ostrzeszów.
The exhibition on the Norwegians was made possible by Eyvind Grundt, the son of one of the prisoners, who from 1982 acted as the museum’s liaison with the Norwegian veterans’ community. Visitors can also climb the Baszta Kazimierzowska (Kazimierz Tower), with a view over the town, and the museum runs lessons and workshops in paper-making.
