About the museum
The museum was founded in 1938 on the initiative of mayor Wacław Kokociński; its first director and co-founder was Tadeusz Piotr Potworowski. After the outbreak of the Second World War the collections were scattered and the institution was closed. In 1960 the District National Council reactivated the museum; it was then looked after by the local PTTK branch, and from 1990 it has been subordinate to the town. In 1998 it was named after its first director.
In 2014 renovation began on the new seat, the former town hall from 1846 at ul. Ratuszowa 2, which had served as the town hall until 1975. The new permanent exhibition opened on 25 September 2015. The building is a monument, and its usable area is almost 900 square metres.
The collections cover archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages, the ethnography of southern Greater Poland, documents on Kępno crafts and the Marksmen's Brotherhood (Bractwo Kurkowe), contemporary painting, and works and memorabilia of Tadeusz Potworowski. The museum also conducts educational and publishing activities and runs a digital archive.
