About the museum
The Regional Museum in Syców was established on 1 February 1982 and opened on 12 September of that year. Local history enthusiasts and cultural activists had campaigned for it for a long time; the first attempts to set up the institution date back to the 1960s. Today the museum is a department of the Syców Culture Centre.
The seat is a historic tenement house from the end of the 18th century, which once housed the sąd grodzki (castle court). The collections include, among other things, seals of the town and of the Lower Silesian duchy from the 13th–15th centuries, prints and manuscripts from the 18th century, German-language local newspapers from the 19th and 20th centuries, maps and plans of the former Syców district, graphic art, and archaeological and ethnographic collections.
Part of the exhibition is devoted to the Biron von Curland family, the former owners of the town. Visitors can see, among other things, a model of the former ducal castle with its defensive walls and a bust of Duchess Emma Elizabeth Françoise Biron von Curland. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions and activities for children.
