About the museum

The Regional Museum in Brzeziny was founded in 1972 on the initiative of members of the Friends of the Brzeziny Land Society, who had been collecting historical memorabilia and documents since 1965. Its first seat was a small premises in a former kindergarten at today's ul. Piłsudskiego 49. The first director was the ethnographer Elżbieta Putyńska.

In 1981 the museum moved to the neo-Gothic palace on the same plot, regarded as the most interesting non-sacred monument in the town. The palace stands on the site of an old wooden manor house of the Buyno family, where the writer Maria Buyno-Arctowa was born. In 1903 the district architect Karol Kleiber remodelled the building into a hunting palace of red brick, with turrets crowned by battlements. Between the wars it housed a health insurance office, and later the building served, among other things, as tenant flats. The town bought it in 1971 in very poor condition.

The interiors were renovated in 2011 and 2020, followed by the façade, and a museum garden was laid out. The collections comprise around 5,200 historical and ethnographic objects. The permanent exhibitions include archaeological finds from the “lost town”, an exhibition on the multicultural town of tailors, a bourgeois parlour and a folk room. The museum also runs school lessons and workshops, temporary exhibitions and the café “U Zbyszka” on the grounds.
