About the museum

The idea of setting up a museum in Gałków was born in 2002, after the success of the exhibition “Gałków na starej fotografii” (Gałków in Old Photographs), held a year earlier in the local library. Tadeusz Stawiak, Andrzej Łuczak and Małgorzata Pakuła obtained premises in a badly damaged building belonging to the commune of Koluszki. It was renovated by volunteers, and the materials were financed by the Koluszki Town Hall (Urząd Miejski w Koluszkach). The official opening took place on 25 September 2003, on the 140th anniversary of a battle from the January Uprising.

The museum is named after Leokadia Marciniak, a teacher, librarian, councillor and author of a monograph on Gałków, who led the folk ensemble and theatre and organised the Towarzystwo Wiedzy Powszechnej (Society for General Knowledge) and a people's university. The institution operates on a voluntary basis, and since 2006 it has been legally supervised by the Ochotnicza Straż Pożarna w Gałkowie (Volunteer Fire Brigade in Gałków).

All exhibits come from donations by residents of Gałków and the surrounding villages. The collections include everyday objects, agricultural tools and machines, documents of social life, photographs and militaria, including memorabilia relating to the First World War and to the fighting in the Gałków area in 1914. Horse-drawn farm machines from the 1970s stand in front of the building.
