About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Handzlówce (Regional Museum in Handzlówka) is housed in the former presbytery of the parish of Saints Peter and Paul, a brick building from the early 20th century on the slope east of the church. The museum is run by the Stowarzyszenie Promocji i Rozwoju Wsi Handzlówka (Association for the Promotion and Development of the Village of Handzlówka). It was established on the initiative of the association and Jadwiga Boniecka. From 1995 residents were encouraged to hand over memorabilia, and the museum opened in 2001, after the construction of a new presbytery was completed.
The present exhibition comprises several rooms, in which objects relating to the history and culture of Handzlówka and the surrounding area are displayed: documents, photographs, folk costumes, everyday objects, craft tools and coins. Part of the collection comes from the old church, demolished in 1900, including a figure of the Crucified Christ and a pyx. Other exhibits relate to the history of the local Ochotnicza Straż Pożarna (Volunteer Fire Brigade), such as a fire pump and uniforms.
In the museum one can buy the book “Żywot chłopa działacza” (The Life of a Peasant Activist) by Franciszek Magryś, which describes the village from the mid-19th century to the 1930s.
