About the museum
The castle in Łańcut was built in the second half of the 16th century as a fortified tower of the Pilecki family, and around 1610 the Stadnicki family extended it into a horseshoe-shaped layout. In 1629–1641 the voivode Stanisław Lubomirski rebuilt the residence to a design by Maciej Trapola and surrounded it with bastion fortifications. In 1745 the estate was inherited by Stanisław Lubomirski, Grand Crown Marshal, and after him by Izabela Lubomirska (née Czartoryska), who after 1783 turned part of the fortifications into gardens.
In 1816 Łańcut passed to Izabela’s grandsons, Alfred and Artur Potocki, and from 1830 it formed an entailed estate (ordynacja), with Alfred Potocki as its first ordynat. Subsequent owners extended and modernised the residence, and an English landscape park of about 36 hectares was laid out around it. In 1944 Alfred Potocki left Poland, and in early September of that year the castle was opened as a museum.
The Museum – Zamek w Łańcucie now presents historic interiors to visitors, including the Ballroom, the Great Dining Room, the Column Hall, the Sculpture Gallery and the Chinese Rooms, as well as the court theatre, one of the two surviving palace theatres in Poland. The Stables and Carriage House hold collections of carriages, and further exhibitions are housed in the Orchid House (Storczykarnia), the Orangery, the Riding Hall and in buildings devoted to Orthodox church art and the history of the town. Since 2005 the complex has been listed as a Monument of History.
