About the museum
The Zagroda – Muzeum Wsi Markowa open-air museum is run by the Friends of Markowa Society (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Markowej), the only social museum of przysłup architecture in Poland. The idea arose in 1978 during the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Rural Youth Union “Wici” (Związek Młodzieży Wiejskiej “Wici”), when former members of Wici decided to set up an organisation documenting the past of the village. The society began its activity in 1979, and one of its main aims was to save a historic homestead with the przysłup construction characteristic of Markowa.
The buildings were moved to a plot made available by the local self-government in 1982–1985. All the work was done free of charge by members of the society, sympathisers and residents, while expert and financial help was provided by the voivodeship monument conservator. The homestead was opened on 25 August 1985, on the occasion of the 600th anniversary of Markowa. Further buildings and exhibits were added to the open-air museum later.
Visitors can now see, among others, a peasant cottage from 1874, the Szylar family cottage, a poor man's cottage with a pigsty, a trestle windmill (wiatrak-koźlak), a bróg, a barn, a forge and an oil press. In one of the chambers of the peasant cottage traditional costumes are displayed, and in another a weaving workshop. A separate building houses a fire-service museum with equipment from the interwar period, from the collections of the Volunteer Fire Brigade (OSP) in Markowa. Visitors are guided by volunteer guides.
