About the museum
The Muzeum Ziemi Miechowskiej (Miechów Land Museum) has been operating since October 2012. It was established on the basis of an agreement between the Powiat Miechowski (Miechów County), the gmina and town of Miechów and the Parish of the Holy Sepulchre in Miechów. Its seat is the post-monastery buildings beside the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre. The Bishop of Kielce also transferred part of the exhibition space in the Zamek Generałów (Dom Generała) to the museum.
The new institution took over the collections of the former Muzeum Regionalne PTTK (PTTK Regional Museum) and of its branch, the Muzeum Kościuszkowskie (Kościuszko Museum), which had previously operated in the manor house “Zacisze”. The scattered monuments had to be gathered, conserved and inventoried, and then permanent and temporary exhibitions had to be prepared.
The permanent exhibitions currently include, among other things, a collection of nearly 200 historic textiles and liturgical vestments from the monastic treasury of the Canons of the Holy Sepulchre, mainly Italian and French, from the 17th and 18th centuries, and the exhibition “Droga do wolności 1863–1918” (The Road to Freedom), about the January Uprising and the struggle for independence in the Miechów region. The museum also conducts tours of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and the post-monastic buildings, and runs lessons and workshops for school groups.
