About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Kluczkowicach was established in June 2007 by the District Council of Opole Lubelskie. Its seat is the Kleniewski palace, renovated in 2006 and located in the Wrzelowiec Landscape Park. The museum occupies several rooms on the ground floor: the former library, the dining room, Jan Kleniewski’s study, the drawing room and the świetlica (common room). The rest of the building is used by a horticultural school.
The palace was built in the 19th century in an eclectic form with features of Classicism. Franciszek Kleniewski with his sons acquired Kluczkowice in 1871, and after the division of the estate it passed to Jan Kleniewski, who commissioned the reconstruction from the Warsaw architect Konstanty Wojciechowski. Outstanding artists designed the interiors: Stanisław Witkiewicz designed the library in the Zakopane style, and Wojciech Gerson designed the common room, in which the Kleniewskis set up a painting gallery. The former library is the only room with partly preserved original fittings. After 1944 the estate was parcelled out, and after the war a school has operated in the building.
The museum presents collections relating to the Opole Lubelskie district: archaeological finds (including items from the Roman period and from the early medieval strongholds on the Chodelka river), ethnographic and geological collections, and memorabilia connected with the Kleniewski family and the history of the narrow-gauge railway. The institution also runs educational activities for schools and temporary exhibitions.
