About the museum
The museum in Kraśnik was founded in 1976 for the 600th anniversary of the town as a Regional Museum. Initially it occupied rooms in a former monastery, and from 1981 a temporary home by the gate of the monastery courtyard. Damp and mould threatened the collections and visitors, so the county authorities made available a two-storey interwar building at ul. Piłsudskiego 2A. The collections cover regional, historical and ethnographic material; the best known are archaeological finds.
The branch devoted to the 24th Uhlan Regiment, stationed in Kraśnik from 1922 to 1939, opened on 6 July 1995 in a new building at ul. Piłsudskiego 7, on the 75th anniversary of the regiment's founding. It holds mementos of soldiers of the regiment, which fought to defend the country in 1939 and, after the war, served in the Polish Armed Forces in the West, in the 1st Armoured Division of General Stanisław Maczek. The branch was closed in 2015 because of its poor technical condition and reopened in October 2020 after modernisation funded by EU money.
Since 2022 the whole has operated under the name Muzeum 24. Pułku Ułanów w Kraśniku as a branch of the National Museum in Lublin. The permanent exhibitions present the history of the regiment, the battles of Kraśnik in 1914–1915 and old Kraśnik.
