About the museum
The first attempt to establish a museum in Praszka was made in 1925 on the initiative of local teachers, but the pre-war collections did not survive. The idea of reviving the museum came in 1975 from Prof. Konrad Jażdżewski, director of the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Łódź. He had inherited the historic tenement house on Plac Grunwaldzki from the Łucki family and handed it over to the town as the museum's seat. The founding meeting took place in June 1976, and the first director was Dr Henryk Łoś. The museum was solemnly opened on 8 May 1980.
From 1911 to 1951 the tenement house housed the pharmacy of Wacław Łucki and his wife Aldona, which is why one of the permanent exhibitions is “In the Old Pharmacy”, with complete furnishings and equipment from the early twentieth century. The other permanent exhibitions present the prehistory of the Praszka area (including the Lusatian culture cemetery on the Bugaj hill), the history of the town from its granting of town rights in 1392 up to the Second World War, Praszka during the plebiscite and the Third Silesian Uprising, folk culture and the natural history of the region, and Prof. Jażdżewski.
In the museum garden stands the historic rolling stock of the narrow-gauge railway that ran the Praszka–Wieluń route until 1987: the steam locomotive Px48-1770 and a passenger carriage, restored in 2015. The collections of the technology department also include musical instruments, cameras and glass plates from 1920–1950. The museum runs temporary exhibitions, school lessons, workshops and the Seminaria Numizmatyczne (numismatic seminars).
