About the museum
The traditions of museum activity in Wieluń go back to 1926, when a group of enthusiasts gathered around Felicja Rymarkiewiczowa and the Polish School Society (Polska Macierz Szkolna) began to collect historical, ethnographic and archaeological materials. The first museum was opened in several rooms of the former castle; after nearly ten years the collections were moved to a bought and adapted former Orthodox church, and the institution was named after Marshal Józef Piłsudski. The outbreak of the Second World War interrupted its work, and the collections were plundered and destroyed.
Today the Wieluń Land Museum has its main seat at ul. Narutowicza 13 in Wieluń and runs several sites: the medieval tower Męczarnia, where part of the exhibition is shown and which has a viewing point at the top, and a branch, the Museum of Manor Interiors in Ożarów, with a manor house, a townhouse in the park and a windmill.
The permanent exhibitions include “Pradzieje ziemi wieluńskiej” (Prehistory of the Wieluń Land), with finds from the Palaeolithic to the period of Roman influences, including a collection of bronze objects of the Lusatian culture and a Scythian dagger, and the ethnographic exhibition “Życie codzienne wsi wieluńskiej na początku XX wieku” (Everyday Life in a Wieluń Village at the Beginning of the 20th Century), with a partial reconstruction of a wooden hut. The museum also organises temporary exhibitions, concerts, museum lessons and workshops, and in 2026 it celebrates a century of museum activity in Wieluń.
