About the museum

The Regional Museum in Olesno opened on 12 June 1960, during the Olesno Days (Dni Olesna), on the initiative of the Association of Friends of the Olesno Land (Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Ziemi Oleskiej) and with the support of the Opole Silesian Museum. It was named after Jan Nikodem Jaroń, an Upper Silesian poet and playwright. Initially it was housed in the building of a former inter-school recreation centre; it had ethnographic and historical departments, and among its first collections was a fully furnished Olesno room. In 1975 the institution became independent.

From 1982 the museum operated in the classicist building of the former town hall on the market square, and from the 1970s it developed an archaeological department based on its own excavations. In 2004 it was moved to a renovated historic 18th-century townhouse at ul. Jaronia 7, which was thoroughly renovated and adapted to the museum’s needs. The commune, the voivodeship self-government and the ministry of culture financed the investment.

The new seat houses the permanent exhibition ‘Dzieje miasta Olesna’ (History of the Town of Olesno). It presents the prehistory of the Olesno Land, the birth of the town together with the earliest mention of Olesno from 1226, the modern period with a model of the town according to the plan by Wernher, and the history of the town from the First World War to 2008. The museum also holds ethnographic collections, including the Olesno folk costume and works by folk artists, as well as historical collections with old guild documents from the end of the 16th century.
