About the museum
The Muzeum Regionalne w Środzie Śląskiej has been operating since 1964 and is housed in the Gothic town hall, which occupies the central part of the market square. Together with the buildings around the square, the town hall encloses an inner courtyard, regarded as one of the prettiest corners of the town.
The most famous monument associated with the museum is the Skarb Średzki (Środa Treasure), a set of medieval royal jewels and coins discovered in the 1980s during construction work in the Old Town. According to the museum, the treasure is temporarily not on display.
In the former council chamber, decorated with 16th- and 17th-century polychromy, there is an exhibition on the guilds of Środa, together with a model of the old town. Next to it stands the prison tower with its preserved Gothic cells, and in separate rooms there are archaeological displays and exhibits of old craftsmen’s tools.
