About the museum

The museum was founded by the well-known regionalist Dr Janusz Peter, director of the district hospital in Tomaszów Lubelski. The official opening took place on 7 October 1962, and the first seat was the hospital. The collection then numbered about 1,700 exhibits and belonged to its founder. In 1967 it was nationalised, and the institution became a county cultural institution.

In 1975 the museum moved to the building of the former District Assembly (Sejmik Powiatowy) and was subordinated to the Zamość District Museum, of which it was a branch until 1999. In 1984 it received a new seat in the newly built Combatants' House (Dom Kombatanta), with an area of 830 m². Since 1999 it has been an independent institution run by Tomaszów County.

Since 2020 the exhibitions have been shown in the former boarding house at ul. Wyspiańskiego 8a. The collections number about 15,000 exhibits in the departments of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnography and art. The museum also runs the Room of Remembrance of Communist Terror (Izba Pamięci Terroru Komunistycznego) at ul. Lwowska 64.
