Limited operations. Preparations for a new permanent exhibition are under way. In the meantime, visitors can see a temporary exhibition.

About the museum

The Muzeum Regionalne w Wągrowcu began operating on 1 October 1987. It is housed in the building known as Opatówka, the former house of the abbot of the Wągrowiec Cistercians, built in the 16th century on the initiative of Abbot Andrzej Gozdawa Dzierżanowski. The former residence, surrounded by gardens and orchards, was remodelled over the following centuries. After the abbey was dissolved, it became the property of the Prussian king and later passed into private hands.

In the early 1980s, the town authorities bought Opatówka with a view to setting up a museum. Renovation and partial reconstruction took place between 1982 and 1987. The museum then had around 200 m² of exhibition space, divided into 11 small rooms. A further general renovation of the building took place in 2023–2024; the architecture and the original room layout were preserved.

The museum collects objects related to the past of the town and the Pałuki region. The collections are divided into historical, art, ethnographic and archaeological departments. Because exhibition space is limited, only part of the collection is on display; the rest is made available during temporary exhibitions and for academic research. The staff carry out archaeological research, publish the results in the journal “Wangrovieciana. Studia et Fontes”, and also run museum lessons and workshops and guide visitors around the sights of Wągrowiec and the surrounding area.
