About the museum

The museum is housed in a historic manor house that belonged to the Marsów family from the mid-19th century until 1945. The family contributed to the economic and political development of Limanowa: with their involvement the Limanowa district (powiat limanowski) was established in 1867, and a brewery famous for its “Marsowe” beer operated at the manor. Between the wars the manor was a centre of public life, visited by, among others, President Ignacy Mościcki and Minister Józef Beck.

After the war the estate was taken from the Marsów family, and various institutions were housed in the building. From 1970, on the initiative of the PTTK branch and the Society of Friends of the Limanowa Land, the Muzeum Ziemi Limanowskiej PTTK operated here. In 1987 a state institution was established – the Muzeum Regionalne Ziemi Limanowskiej – and since 1992 it has been a municipal cultural institution of the town of Limanowa. Since 1987 the manor has been the museum’s sole seat.

The collection comprises around 26,000 historical, ethnographic, artistic and photographic objects. The permanent exhibitions include a display on the oil refinery in Sowliny, an exhibition on the Battle of Limanowa in 1914 and on Józef Beck, presenting the largest collection of watch fobs in Poland, and paintings by Maksymilian Brożek. The manor also houses a conference room in the Louis-Philippe style with original furniture from the Marsów family.
