About the museum
The Muzeum Lachów Sądeckich grew out of the private ethnographic collection of Zofia and Stanisław Chrząstowski, regionalists and promoters of culture who had lived in Podegrodzie since the late 1920s. Today it bears their name and is a branch of the Sądecki Ethnographic Park, which belongs to the Regional Museum in Nowy Sącz (Muzeum Okręgowe w Nowym Sączu).
The exhibition is devoted to the traditional material culture of the Lachy region: agriculture and rural crafts such as pottery, blacksmithing, fibre processing and weaving. It also presents contemporary folk art and ritual art connected with family and annual festivities: wedding wands (różdżki weselne), Easter palms, harvest wreaths, nativity crèches (szopki), carol stars (gwiazdy kolędnicze), turonie (Christmas masked figures) and little hobby horses (koniki). A separate part consists of original festive costumes from Podegrodzie from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, richly embroidered kaftans, corsets and wizytki (women's jackets).
The exhibition is supplemented by archival photographs by the village photographer Wojciech Migacz from Gostwica, taken at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and by the exhibition “Archaeology of Podegrodzie and the Surroundings of Nowy Sącz” from the collection of the Nowy Sącz museum. Both exhibitions, the ethnographic and the archaeological, are in one room.
