About the museum

The Muzeum Skamieniałości i Minerałów (Museum of Fossils and Minerals) grew out of the collection of Robert Szybiak, who had gathered specimens for over forty years. The official opening took place on 29 December 2007. The institution is housed in the owner's private house and occupies three rooms with a total area of more than 80 m², in which several thousand exhibits are shown.

A considerable part of the collection consists of fossils from the Carpathian flysch: fish, crabs and plants from the Oligocene. A separate group consists of bones of Pleistocene mammals found in the valleys of the San and Wisłok rivers, including mammoths, woolly rhinoceroses, giant deer, reindeer and bison. A particularly notable specimen is the fossil of one of the oldest passerine birds, described as jamna szybiaki.

The collection also includes petrified wood, bivalves, snails, corals, ammonites, trilobites, sea urchins and belemnites, as well as minerals, among them agates, amethysts, gypsum and rock crystal. According to the museum, a new exhibition of fossils from the Carpathian flysch has been opened, which shows, among other things, the fish Anenchelum, 167 cm long, and shark bones and teeth.
