About the museum
The beginnings of the Muzeum Śremskie are linked to the collections of Feliks Sałaciński, a confectioner from Śrem. After 1918 he set up a private museum in his flat, which before the Second World War held around four thousand objects. After the war the collector rebuilt the scattered collections, but he did not manage to hand them over formally to the town. Part of the collection was bought by the municipal authorities and became the basis of the present museum, which was given rooms in the former town hall in 1976.
In 1991 the museum received its own building at ul. Adama Mickiewicza 89. By 2009 the façade had been renovated and an outbuilding converted into a gallery; the largest modernisation ran from 2014 to 2023. It included renovation of the roof and attic, replacement of the windows, an extension with a glazed exhibition pavilion and an assembly hall for 300 people, renovation of the garden, reconstruction of the car park and modernisation of the permanent exhibitions, co-financed to the extent of 85 per cent from EU funds.
The museum now presents, among other things, the interactive exhibition “Śrem poprzez wieki” (Śrem Through the Ages), arranged like a hall of the former Odlewnia Żeliwa (cast-iron foundry); the Sala Kolekcjonera (Collector’s Room) with Sałaciński’s collection; an exhibition on the local dialect and folk costume; the work of the artist Jerzy Jurga; and the Galeria ’99 with contemporary art. In the garden by the Promenada Nadwarciańska an open-air exhibition is shown, along with the Ogród Rzeźb (Sculpture Garden) with works by Magdalena Abakanowicz, Jan Berdyszak and Jerzy Jurga.
