About the museum

The beginnings of museum collecting in Gostyń go back to the 19th century, when mineralogical collections and models of agricultural tools were gathered in the local Kasyno (Casino). Between the wars, valuable historical and archaeological collections belonged to the grammar school, to the Kongregacja Filipinów na Świętej Górze (Congregation of the Philippines at Święta Góra) and to the private collector Władysław Stachowski. Plans to set up a regional museum could not be realised at that time.

After the Second World War, memorabilia and documents were collected at the Gostyń public library. The Izba Muzealna (Museum Room) opened on 21 May 1967 in the former building of the Kurkowe Bractwo Strzeleckie (Fowlers’ Shooting Guild) at ul. Strzelecka. From 1971 the institution was called the Muzeum Ziemi Gostyńskiej (Gostyń Land Museum), and in 1972 it was moved to the building of the public library.

In 2010 the museum moved to a new building at ul. Kościelna 5, where it operates to this day. The collection numbers more than two thousand exhibits from archaeology, history, military affairs, numismatics, art and ethnography. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by temporary exhibitions, and the institution is a local-government cultural institution of the Gmina Gostyń.
