About the museum
The Stanisław Staszic Museum is housed in the Staszic family house in the Piła district of Zamoście. The earliest mention of it dates from 1783, when Stanisław's father, Wawrzyniec Staszic, drew up an inventory of his estate. In 1794 he sold the Piła properties and left, and for almost 150 years the house belonged to other families. During the fighting for Piła in January and February 1945 the building was seriously damaged, and in 1947–1948 it was rebuilt in brick, preserving its former shape and room layout.
The biographical museum opened on 21 January 1951; it was organised by staff of the National Museum in Poznań. In 1975 the house became the seat of the newly founded Regional Museum, and in 1981, after the regional museum had moved out, it returned to its role as a biographical institution. Since 1985 the Stanisław Staszic Museum has been an independent municipal institution; in 1999 it was taken over by the local government and became a unit of the Gmina Piła.
In 2021 the building underwent a thorough renovation co-financed from the Greater Poland Regional Operational Programme, which included drying the cellars, new external stairs and a lift for people with disabilities. The permanent exhibition “Stanisław Staszic – życie i działalność” (Stanisław Staszic – Life and Work) presents the most valuable relics in thematic groups: his youth and travels, his work in the Warsaw Society of Friends of Learning (Towarzystwo Warszawskie Przyjaciół Nauk), his literary output, his public service in the Duchy of Warsaw and the Kingdom of Poland, and his testament.
