About the museum

The Muzeum Okręgowe in Piła (Regional Museum) has operated since 15 August 1975, when, after the administrative reform and the creation of the Piła Voivodeship, the former Stanisław Staszic biographical museum was transformed into it. The institution's first seat was the small house of Staszic. In 1981 the museum moved to the former building of the Shooting Brotherhood (Bractwo Strzeleckie) at ul. Chopina, and in 1997 to its present seat at ul. Browarna 7.

The building dates from the second half of the 19th century and has features of an Italian villa. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Piła, as the town was largely destroyed at the beginning of 1945. From 1934 to 1939 it housed the Polish consulate, which represented Poles in the German province of Grenzmark Posen-Westpreußen; it was the only property in Piła belonging to the Polish state treasury.

The museum holds archaeological, ethnographic, historical and art collections, as well as a library. It is a self-governing cultural institution of the Greater Poland Voivodeship, entered in the State Register of Museums (Państwowy Rejestr Muzeów), and its branch is the Museum of Folk Culture in Osiek nad Notecią.
