About the museum
The first collections on Czarnków and its surroundings were gathered in the interwar period by teachers of the local grammar school. A Muzeum Nadnoteckie (Noteć Region Museum) was planned at the time, but the institution was not established before the outbreak of the Second World War. After the war, mementos were collected by the director of the municipal public library, and the idea of a museum returned in the mid-1990s. The museum opened on 10 June 1998.
The institution is housed in the brick building of a former Prussian school from the end of the nineteenth century, at ul. Wronieckiej. The collections are divided into three departments: archaeological, ethnographic and historical-artistic. The archaeological department contains objects from a second-century Gothic cemetery at Walkowice, medieval finds from the market square (today plac Wolności) and from the former stronghold, and finds from a seventeenth-century cemetery in Drawsko.
The ethnographic department has more than 450 objects: agricultural and craft tools, furniture, vessels, toys, clothing, devotional objects and folk art. It is distinguished by a collection of faience from the Stanisław Mańczak factory in Chodzież from 1924–1936 and a collection of wall hangings (makatki). The historical-artistic department includes mementos of the Greater Poland Uprising, postcards, militaria, uniforms, documents, maps, silverware, pewter, electroplated objects, photographs and Judaica.
