About the museum
The first Koźle museum was founded in 1924 by the teacher and head of a grammar school, Johann Alexander. In the 1930s it was moved to a building at ul. Bohaterów Westerplatte, but the Second World War ended its activity and many of its collections were lost. In the 1960s residents began efforts to establish a memorial room, to which the Society of the Koźle Land (Towarzystwo Ziemi Kozielskiej) made a major contribution.
The present institution was established in 2009 by a resolution of the city council as a museum in organisation. Its first director was appointed in 2015, and in 2017 archaeological and construction works began on Castle Hill as part of a project to revitalise the castle complex. In December 2019 the organisation of the institution was completed and it was renamed the Muzeum Ziemi Kozielskiej w Kędzierzynie-Koźlu; the solemn opening took place on 27 September 2019.
The permanent exhibition was opened on 27 October 2020, and in 2023 it was modernised and enriched with new objects, including prints by Georg Rasel, memorabilia of the Planetor family, early modern maps of Silesia and furniture from the early 20th century. The exhibition runs from natural history and prehistoric man, through the stronghold, the castle, the Duchy of Koźle and the fortress, to the Silesian uprisings, industry, floods and the formation of Kędzierzyn-Koźle.
